Importance of Soil

Soil:

What is Soil?
Soil is composed of three different components: inorganic matter (minerals) from rocks nearby; water, air and organic matter, which consists of humus (remains of plants and animals); and the living organisms of microscopic bacteria and fungi, which live in the soil.

Why is Soil Important?
Healthy soil gives us clean water and air, productive grazing lands and crops, a diverse wildlife and the well-known beautiful South African landscapes. All of the benefits are performed with seven essential functions:
  • Soil is a medium for growing a variety of plants
  • Soil cleans the atmosphere by emitting and absorbing gasses and dust
  • Soil provides environments for many animals to live in.
  • Soil holds, releases, alters and purifies most of the water in the terrestrial systems.
  • Soils act an aquifer - cleans water before it moves to underground storage.
  • Soil processes recycled materials so that living things can use them again and again.
  • Soil is an engineering media for construction of roadbeds, dams, buildings, foundations and preserve human artifacts of history and archeology.
